shopify holiday shipping cutoff dates
Shopify holiday shipping cutoff dates for 2026: set your order-by dates and show them
Turn the 2026 USPS, UPS and FedEx last-ship dates into your own order-by dates, then show them at checkout with Shopify transit times and a cutoff banner.
Key takeaways
- USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail ship-by is Dec 17, Priority Mail Dec 18 and Priority Mail Express Dec 19 for the lower 48; FedEx Ground Economy is Dec 15 and FedEx Express Saver Dec 21.
- Your customer-facing cutoff is the carrier date minus your handling time minus a buffer of at least one business day, so it lands earlier than any carrier table.
- In Settings → Shipping and delivery, flat rates can show a transit time at checkout; custom rates can show only a text description, not calculated dates.
- Post the cutoff before Black Friday (Nov 27) so it is live for Cyber Monday (Nov 30) and the weeks after.
- International parcels run much earlier: USPS international First-Class and Priority Mail are Dec 9 per ShipStation's summary.
The 2026 carrier dates
For the lower 48 states, the last day to ship with USPS Ground Advantage is Thursday, Dec 17, and Priority Mail is Friday, Dec 18. FedEx Ground Economy is Dec 15. Those are the carriers' dates, not yours. Your customers need an earlier one, and this post shows how to work it out and publish it.
Dates below come from Value Added Resource and ShipStation, which agree with each other. The USPS and FedEx originals would not load for me, so confirm against the USPS announcement and the FedEx peak PDF before you print anything.
| Carrier and service | Last day to ship (lower 48) |
|---|---|
| FedEx Ground Economy | Dec 15 |
| USPS Ground Advantage, First-Class Mail | Dec 17 |
| FedEx Ground / Home Delivery, 5-day transit | Dec 17 |
| USPS Priority Mail | Dec 18 |
| USPS Priority Mail Express | Dec 19 |
| FedEx Express Saver, 3-day Ground transit | Dec 21 |
| UPS 3 Day Select / 2nd Day Air / Next Day Air | Dec 21 / Dec 22 / Dec 23 |
| FedEx 2Day / Overnight services | Dec 22 / Dec 23 |
FedEx targets delivery by Dec 24; USPS targets delivery before Dec 25. UPS Ground has no single date: UPS sends you to its calculator at ups.com/ctc. UPS's own holiday page still showed the 2025 schedule when ValueAddedResource checked, so confirm there too. Alaska, Hawaii and territories get earlier Ground Advantage dates.
Work backwards to your own order-by date
Your cutoff is the carrier's last ship day, minus a buffer, minus your handling time. Do it per service, because a Dec 17 ship date means different order-by dates for a store that ships same day and one that ships in three.
Example only: a store with one business day of handling that wants a one-business-day weather buffer on USPS Ground Advantage.
- Carrier last ship day: Thursday, Dec 17.
- Subtract the buffer (one business day): ship by Wednesday, Dec 16.
- Subtract handling (one business day): order by Tuesday, Dec 15.
Publish "Order by Dec 15 for Christmas delivery", not "Dec 17". If you pick and pack in batches, or your warehouse closes early the week of Dec 21, move the date earlier still.
Two rules keep this honest. First, a cutoff is a promise your team has to keep, so check your real handling time on orders from the last two weeks of November, when volume is highest. Second, rural and remote addresses often take longer than the carrier average, so use a buffer of two business days for them.
Show transit time at checkout
Shopify can show a delivery estimate under each shipping option at checkout. According to Shopify's transit time help page, the path is Settings → Shipping and delivery, then open the shipping profile and edit the option.
- Next to the shipping zone, click Add shipping option, or use the menu next to an existing rate and click Edit shipping option.
- Enter a name, and optionally a description.
- Pick a Transit time from the dropdown, for example "Express (1 to 2 business days)".
- Click Done, then Save.
Limits that catch people out:
- Flat rates can use only the predefined transit options. A custom flat rate can carry a custom description but will not show calculated delivery dates.
- Carrier-calculated rates include transit time automatically.
- Transit time does not include your processing time, so a "2 business days" label is accurate only if you ship the same day.
- Each zone must contain a single country, and the feature is limited to fulfillment locations in the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia and the UK.
Shopify is gradually moving stores to shipping options by market. Your setup stays as it is until upgraded, and existing rates migrate automatically.
Say it before checkout
Checkout is too late to learn that a gift will not arrive. Put the order-by date where the decision is made:
- Announcement bar. In the theme editor (Online Store → Themes → Customize), most themes have an announcement bar section in the header group. Write one line: "Order by Dec 15 for Christmas delivery in the US."
- Product pages. Add a short line under the add-to-cart button, from one shared text block so you update one place, not 200 products.
- Shipping policy. Settings → Policies. List each service with its order-by date.
- Order confirmation. Settings → Notifications → Order confirmation. Add a sentence on when the order will ship, so support emails drop.
Go live before Black Friday (Nov 27). Cyber Monday is Nov 30, and gift buyers shop all of December. Then change the banner as dates pass: after Dec 15, point shoppers to your faster, paid options.
Keep selling after the cheap option closes
The free or cheap service closes first. Instead of removing shipping, change what you offer:
- Before the cheapest cutoff: free shipping over your threshold, labeled with its order-by date.
- After it: keep Priority and Express rates, name the day each one still makes Christmas, and check the margin with the profit calculator so a rush order does not lose money.
- Last week: sell gift cards, which need no shipping and arrive by email.
Goalify can run a free-shipping progress bar with rules by cart value, so the goal sits at your standard rate's threshold and nudges the basket up while it does. Use the progress bar calculator to pick the number, and see the free shipping bar roundup for options. Goalify is on the Shopify App Store, rated 5.0 and Built for Shopify.
Plan for address changes and cancellations
Gift orders mean wrong addresses, and every fix after the cutoff costs a parcel or a refund. Decide a rule now: customers can edit until you start fulfillment, after which they contact support.
Reviso lets customers edit their address and cancel orders themselves, which moves those emails out of your inbox in the busiest weeks. It is free on the Shopify App Store. Our guide to customer order editing covers the setup choices.
International parcels run earlier
ShipStation lists USPS First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International at Dec 9, and Priority Mail Express International at Dec 16. FedEx International Priority to Canada is Dec 23 and to Mexico Dec 22, and UPS Worldwide Express to Canada is Dec 23. Customs delays are not in those dates.
If you sell through Shopify Markets, give each market its own cutoff in its shipping policy text and announcement bar, and do not promise Christmas delivery abroad on a standard service after Dec 9.
This-week checklist
- Verify each date against the USPS, FedEx and UPS pages linked above.
- Compute order-by dates per service and per market.
- Set transit times on flat rates in Settings → Shipping and delivery.
- Publish the banner, product line, policy and confirmation email before Nov 27.
- Set a calendar reminder for Dec 14 to review the last open cutoff, and update the banner each time one passes.
Shopify questions
What is the last day to ship for Christmas in 2026?
It depends on the service. For the lower 48 states, USPS Ground Advantage is Dec 17, Priority Mail Dec 18 and Priority Mail Express Dec 19; FedEx Overnight services are Dec 23. Your own order-by date should be earlier.
Does Shopify show estimated delivery dates at checkout?
For carrier-calculated rates, transit time is included automatically. For flat rates you can pick a transit time in the shipping option, but custom flat rates only show a text description. Transit time does not include your processing time.
Should I stop offering free shipping near Christmas?
Not necessarily. Keep free shipping on your slowest service, but state its order-by date clearly and offer a paid faster option for late orders.
Do UPS Ground cutoffs have a fixed date?
No. UPS does not publish one date for Ground; it points shippers to its calculator at ups.com/ctc, because transit depends on the route.
