What ROAS does a sale on your Shopify store need?
Price, product cost, and the other costs on the order. You get the ROAS where the sale stops losing money and the most you can pay for the order.
- Break-even ROASThe minimum return per ad dollar
- Max cost per orderThe most an order can cost in ads
- Money left before adsContribution per sale
Why Shopify merchants set a target ROAS before scaling
Ads Manager will happily show a 2.5x ROAS as a win. Whether it is one depends on the money left on the order after product cost, shipping, and fees. The Shopify ROAS calculator turns those three numbers into the break-even return and the maximum cost per order you can afford, so your target ROAS is based on your margin and not on a rule of thumb.
Want the ad side estimated from CPM and conversion rate? Use the Shopify profit calculator. Checking a competitor’s price from the product exporter? Enter it here with your costs to see the ROAS you would need to match them.
ROAS on Shopify is revenue divided by ad spend. The number that matters first is break-even ROAS: the return where the sale covers product cost, shipping, and fees and nothing is left. This calculator takes the price and the costs on one order and gives you that return, so a target in Ads Manager is a number you chose, not a default.
A store with repeat buyers can accept a lower first-order ROAS. Check that with the Shopify lifetime value calculator before you decide the first sale must pay for the whole customer. If you are still guessing CPM and conversion rate, use the profit calculator instead.
How to use the ROAS calculator
- Enter the price a customer pays, after any discount you are running.
- Enter the product cost from your latest supplier invoice.
- Enter the shipping you pay plus the payment fee on one order.
- Read break-even ROAS and the most an order can cost in ads.

ROAS questions Shopify merchants ask
How break-even ROAS is worked out and how to use it as a target.
How is break-even ROAS calculated?
Selling price divided by the money left after product cost and other costs. If a $50 product leaves $30 after costs, break-even ROAS is 50 ÷ 30 = 1.67x. Anything above that contributes profit.
What target ROAS should I set in Meta or TikTok Ads?
Above break-even with a cushion for returns and days when performance dips. Many merchants set the target 20–30% above the break-even number the calculator gives.
Should shipping be in “shipping and fees”?
Only the part you pay and don’t charge the customer. Add payment processing fees and any per-order app or fulfilment charge too.
Is this the same as the profit calculator?
This one starts from the money left on the order. The profit calculator also estimates the ad cost from CPM, CTR, and conversion rate.
Does a higher order value change my break-even ROAS?
Yes. Bundles and upsells raise the money left per order faster than they raise ad cost, which lowers the ROAS you need. Read the average order value lesson for ways to lift it.
How do I calculate break-even ROAS for Shopify ads?
Divide the selling price by the profit left after product cost, shipping, and fees. If a $60 product keeps $20 before ads, break-even ROAS is 3. Below that, the sale loses money.
What is a good ROAS for Shopify Facebook ads?
Above your break-even, with room for returns. A 3x ROAS is strong on a high-margin product and a loss on a thin one. The calculator uses your costs, not a universal target.
Is MER the same as ROAS?
No. ROAS here is for the ad spend you are judging. Marketing efficiency ratio divides all revenue by all marketing spend. Use ROAS to decide a campaign. Use margin to decide whether the business keeps money.
Can break-even ROAS be under 2 for a Shopify product?
Yes, when the margin before ads is wide — price far above product cost and shipping. Confirm that margin in the profit margin calculator so a discount does not wipe it out.
Does the ROAS calculator include platform fees?
Put payment processing and the shipping you absorb into the cost fields. Leave them out and the break-even return looks easier than the payout.
My campaign ROAS is above break-even but I am not making money. Why?
Break-even ROAS only covers product, shipping and fees. Returns, discount codes, apps, creative and your time come out of the gap. Run the finished campaign through the ROI calculator to see profit after those.
