shopify black friday bundle offer
How to build a Black Friday bundle on Shopify that still makes money
Black Friday is Nov 27, 2026. Work out the deepest bundle discount your margin allows, then set the bundle up in Shopify and test it before the traffic lands.
Key takeaways
- Black Friday 2026 is Friday, Nov 27 and Cyber Monday is Nov 30, so a bundle needs to be built and tested by about Nov 13.
- Price a bundle from landed cost, shipping and fees, not from a round percentage: in the worked example below, 15% off keeps a 44% margin and 30% off drops it to 33%.
- A bundle earns its discount by lifting order value, not by cutting price: in the example a 15% bundle makes about 2.7x the profit of a single-item order.
- Shopify's built-in Buy X get Y never adds items to the cart for the shopper, so a true one-click bundle needs theme code or an app such as Addly.
- Set Active dates in your admin time zone and check the Combinations boxes, or your Black Friday code can stack with the bundle.
The dates you're building towards
Black Friday 2026 is Friday, Nov 27. US Thanksgiving is Thursday, Nov 26, and Cyber Monday is Nov 30. That leaves about four weeks. Work backward: finish pricing this week, build the bundle by about Nov 13, and spend the days after that testing checkout, not tweaking the offer.
Bundles are the easiest BFCM offer to get wrong. A flat "30% off everything" is simple, but it hits your best sellers and your thinnest margins at the same time. A bundle lets you discount only when the cart gets bigger.
Price the bundle from cost, not from a percentage
Start with what one bundle order costs you, not what discount looks competitive. For each bundle, add up:
- Landed cost of every item (product plus inbound freight and duties).
- Shipping and packing for the order.
- Payment processing fees, which are a percentage of the discounted price plus a fixed fee.
- Anything per order that you pay for, such as a gift box or insert.
Then decide the lowest margin you will accept on Black Friday. Ad costs usually rise in Q4, so leave room. If you are not sure of your baseline, gross vs net margin explains what to include, and the profit margin calculator checks the maths.
Worked example: a three-item gift set
This is a made-up store with assumed costs, to show the method. Swap in your own numbers.
- Candle: $28 price, $9 landed cost.
- Soap: $18 price, $6 landed cost.
- Lotion: $24 price, $8 landed cost.
- Shipping and packing: $8 per order, whatever is in it.
- Payment fees: assume 3% plus $0.30 per order.
The three items sell for $70 separately and cost $23 to source. Here is the profit per order at different bundle discounts:
| Offer | Order total | Fees | Profit | Margin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full price, no discount | $70.00 | $2.40 | $36.60 | 52.3% |
| Bundle, 15% off | $59.50 | $2.09 | $26.41 | 44.4% |
| Bundle, 25% off | $52.50 | $1.88 | $19.63 | 37.4% |
| Bundle, 30% off | $49.00 | $1.77 | $16.23 | 33.1% |
| Candle alone, full price | $28.00 | $1.14 | $9.86 | 35.2% |
Look at the last row. A shopper who would have bought only the candle earns you $9.86. The same shopper in a 15% bundle earns you $26.41, about 2.7 times as much, even after the discount. The bundle is not a price cut. It is a way to move a one-item order to a three-item order.
It also shows the limit. Going from 15% to 30% off gives up $10.18 per order. It only pays if the deeper discount brings in meaningfully more orders, and you can't know that in advance. Start shallow. You can deepen the offer on Cyber Monday, but you can't claw a discount back.
If the bundle only appeals to people who were already buying all three items, you are paying a discount for nothing. Build bundles around items that are bought alone, or that buyers pair with something cheaper.
What Shopify's built-in discounts can do
The closest native tool is Buy X get Y. In the admin go to Discounts → Create discount → Buy X get Y. Choose a discount code or an automatic discount, then fill in Customer buys (a minimum quantity or amount, from specific products or collections) and Customer gets (the products, plus Percentage, Amount off each or Free).
For the example, you could set "buy a candle and a soap, get the lotion 30% off". The settings that matter on Black Friday:
- Eligibility: all customers, specific customers, segments or markets. Use markets if the bundle is priced for the US only.
- Combinations: only the discount classes you tick can apply together. Leave everything unticked if your sitewide code would push the bundle below your floor.
- Active dates: start and end times follow the time zone set in your admin. Check it before you schedule a midnight launch.
Read the limits on Shopify's Buy X get Y page. Two matter here. Customers must add every qualifying item themselves, because the discounted item is never added automatically. And the minimum purchase amount counts only full-price products in "Customer buys", so items already discounted by a combined discount don't count toward it.
That second point is where margin leaks. If your sitewide code is allowed to combine with the bundle, the shopper may qualify for both, and your 15% bundle becomes something much deeper. Test it with a real cart before launch.
Making the bundle one click
With native discounts alone, the shopper has to find three products and add them separately. Many won't. A bundle only lifts order value if it is easy to take, so it should be a single block on the product page that adds everything and shows the saving.
You have two routes. One is theme code that calls the cart API to add all the items at once, which works but is yours to maintain through theme updates. The other is an app. Addly handles bundles, frequently bought together, volume discounts, add-ons and mix-and-match offers. As of Oct 26, 2026 its listing shows 4.9 stars from 115 reviews and Built for Shopify status. The free plan allows up to 3 offers, which is enough for a few Black Friday bundles. Unlimited offers and Markets support start at $15 a month, with a 14-day trial.
Addly pairs well with Monet, which shows a popup offer when a shopper adds to cart, starts checkout or moves to leave. Use it to offer the bundle, or a small add-on, to shoppers who bought one item and skipped the rest. As of Oct 26, 2026 the listing shows 5.0 stars from 4 reviews and the app is free. Keep the popup offer inside the same margin floor as the bundle.
Whichever you use, apply the same rule: the bundle price must clear your margin floor from the table above, with any other active discount switched on.
Test checklist before Nov 27
- Build a real cart in an incognito window and check the total against your spreadsheet to the cent.
- Add your sitewide Black Friday code on top. Confirm the result is either blocked or still above your margin floor.
- Test on a phone. Check that the bundle block is visible without scrolling past the add-to-cart button.
- Check each market. If you sell in several currencies, confirm the bundle price and rounding in each one.
- Check stock. A bundle sells your slowest item at the speed of your fastest. If the candle sells out, the whole offer is dead. Check inventory depth for every component, and set a rule for what happens at zero.
- Set the end time. Decide whether the offer ends Cyber Monday night or runs through the week, and schedule it in Active dates.
If you also want a spend threshold to push the cart above the bundle, the progress bar calculator suggests a free shipping level from your average order value. And if you're considering a gift on top, see how to set up a free gift with purchase first, because stacking a gift and a bundle discount eats margin twice.
Shopify questions
When is Black Friday 2026?
Black Friday is Friday, Nov 27, 2026, the day after US Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov 26. Cyber Monday is Nov 30.
How much discount can a bundle carry?
Subtract landed cost, shipping and packing, and payment fees from the bundle price, then see what margin is left. Set your floor first and work backward. The profit margin calculator does the sum.
Does Shopify have a built-in bundle discount?
Buy X get Y covers "buy these, get that discounted" offers, but shoppers must add every item to the cart themselves. Shopify's help center says the discounted item is never added automatically.
Can a bundle discount stack with my Black Friday code?
Only if you let it. Each discount has a Combinations section, and only the discount classes you tick can apply together. Untick everything on the bundle if you want it to stand alone.
Should the bundle go live before Black Friday?
A soft launch for your email list a few days early lets you catch errors while traffic is small. Just remember the discount's start and end times follow your admin time zone.
