shopify meta title and description
How to write Shopify meta titles and descriptions that get clicked and quoted
Where to edit meta titles and descriptions in Shopify, how long they can be, a formula per page type, and how to handle hundreds of products without duplicates.
Key takeaways
- Edit them at Products, open the product, then the pencil icon in the Search engine listing section; pages and the homepage have their own editors.
- Shopify says titles over 70 characters and descriptions over 320 may be cut off, and its SEO guide recommends about 60 characters for titles to avoid truncation.
- A good title names the product, the one attribute a buyer filters by, and your brand last; a good description adds one concrete reason to click.
- Google can rewrite what you enter, so write for accuracy first and do not chase a perfect string.
- Duplicate or empty fields are the real problem at catalog scale; fix the top 20 products by revenue by hand, then batch the rest and review the output.
Where to edit them in Shopify
Every product, page and collection has a Search engine listing section. That is where the meta title (called Page title) and meta description live.
- Products: Products → open the product → click the pencil icon in the Search engine listing section. You can set the page title, the description and, if you need it, the URL handle.
- Pages: Online Store → Pages → open the page → in the Search engine listing preview section click Edit website SEO.
- Homepage: Online Store → Preferences → the Social sharing image and SEO section.
If you leave the fields blank, Shopify fills them from the product title and description, which is why so many stores have near-identical snippets. Blank is not neutral. It is a decision to let the product name and the first lines of the description speak for the page.
How long they can be
Shopify's help center says titles over 70 characters and descriptions over 320 characters may be cut off in search results. Its separate SEO guide says up to 70 characters are allowed for a page title but that 60 avoids truncation, and it recommends about 160 characters for a description.
Use the tighter numbers. Aim for a title around 55 to 60 characters and a description around 150 to 160. Put the information that matters in the first half, so a cut-off does not remove it.
Search engines can also rewrite what you enter. Shopify says so directly: results may not match your fields. That is not a reason to skip the work. A title and description that accurately summarize the page are the ones least likely to be replaced.
A title formula you can repeat
For product pages, use this order: product name, one attribute a buyer filters by, brand. The attribute is the thing people add to a search: size, material, color, compatibility or count.
| Page type | Pattern | Example (hypothetical store) |
|---|---|---|
| Product | Name, key attribute, brand | Cedar Candle, 8 oz Soy Wax | Northfield Co |
| Collection | What it is, who or what for, brand | Soy Candles for Gifting | Northfield Co |
| Page | What the visitor wants to know | Shipping and Returns | Northfield Co |
Do not stack keywords. "Candles, soy candles, scented candles, buy candles" tells a reader nothing and looks like spam. One clear phrase beats three near-duplicates.
What a good description adds
The description has one job: give a reason to click that the title could not fit. Pick one concrete detail from the page, such as burn time, a material, the return window or the shipping cutoff, and state it plainly.
- Start with the product, not the store. "Hand-poured 8 oz soy candle with a cedar and amber scent" beats "Welcome to our store."
- Include one fact the page backs up. If the description says free returns, the return policy must say so. A mismatch costs trust and clicks.
- End with an action only if it is true. "Ships in 2 business days" is a fact. "Shop now" adds nothing.
These same lines are what search and AI systems use to understand the page at a glance, so accuracy matters more than flair.
A before and after (hypothetical example)
This example is made up to show the pattern. A store sells one scented candle and has left the fields on their defaults.
| Before | After | |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Cedar Candle | Cedar Candle, 8 oz Soy Wax | Northfield Co |
| Description | Our best-selling candle. Hand poured in small batches. Made with care and a love of… | Hand-poured 8 oz soy candle with a cedar and amber scent. Burns for about 45 hours. Ships in 2 business days. |
The "after" version tells a searcher the size, the material, what it smells like and when it arrives, and each detail came from the product page. The "before" version is the first two sentences of the description, cut off mid-thought. If you cannot back a detail with the page, leave it out.
Mistakes that cost clicks
- The same description on every variant or collection. Search engines treat them as repetitive, and shoppers cannot tell the results apart.
- The brand first. A title that starts with "Northfield Co |" spends its best characters on a name searchers did not type. Put the brand last unless people search for it.
- Promises the page does not keep. "Free shipping" in the description needs a matching shipping policy and, if there is a threshold, the threshold. A mismatch is a quick bounce.
- Changing handles to match a new title. Editing the URL handle without a redirect breaks links and loses ranking. Change the title and description freely; change the handle only when you must, and keep the redirect Shopify offers.
- Stuffing the year or the sale. "Black Friday 2026" in a title is out of date in December. Put dates in banners, not in fields you will forget to change.
Doing it across a whole catalog
Writing one title is easy. Writing 400 without repeating yourself is the actual problem. Work in this order.
- Export what you have. Our product exporter pulls a public catalog to CSV, so you can see which products share a title or have no description.
- Sort by revenue. Write the top 20 products by hand. These pages get the most search traffic and the most scrutiny.
- Batch the long tail. Use a consistent pattern from the table above and add one product-specific attribute per row. Do not publish identical descriptions across variants.
- Check for duplicates afterwards. If Google Search Console shows duplicate or alternate-page warnings, the duplicate content guide explains which ones matter.
Run the finished pages through the Shopify SEO check to confirm that Google and ChatGPT can read them.
If you want a tool to draft the long tail
For a large catalog, drafting by hand takes days. Rankly generates AI meta titles and descriptions with a Google preview before you save, and can do bulk product descriptions and image alt text. As of Oct 27, 2026 its free plan includes 100 AI credits, and paid plans start at $9.99 a month. It launched recently and has no reviews yet, so test it on 10 products first.
Whatever you use, review the output. Delete any claim the product page does not support, and make sure no two products end up with the same description.
Shopify questions
Where do I edit the meta title and description in Shopify?
For a product, go to Products, open it, and click the pencil icon in the Search engine listing section. For pages, use Online Store, Pages. For the homepage, use Online Store, Preferences, in the Social sharing image and SEO section.
How long should a Shopify meta title be?
Shopify's SEO guide says up to 70 characters are allowed but 60 avoids truncation in search results. Its product help says titles over 70 may be cut off.
Does the meta description affect rankings?
It is not a ranking signal you can rely on, but it shapes whether people click and gives search and AI systems a summary of the page. Google may also replace it with text from the page.
Why does Google show a different title than the one I wrote?
Google can rewrite titles and descriptions, so results may not match what you entered. A title that clearly matches the page content is less likely to be replaced.
Should I use AI to write meta descriptions?
It is fine for a first draft on a large catalog if you review every line for accuracy. Never publish generated text that claims features the product does not have.
